Anxiety is a complex and pervasive emotion that we all encounter at various points in our lives. The American Psychological Association defines anxiety as “an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure.” Yet, anxiety is not a one-size-fits-all experience. It’s a nuanced emotion that can manifest in a multitude of ways, from mild discomfort during routine events to overwhelming panic in response to life-changing circumstances. Often, it feels like a cascade of emotions has lost its way, aimlessly and restlessly wandering within our minds and bodies. Describing these sensations can be challenging, and sometimes, we’re not even fully aware of what’s truly happening within us.

I view anxiety as the tip of an iceberg – a visible symptom of something deeper that may not be immediately apparent. It’s like a signal from our inner world, urging us to pay attention to aspects of ourselves that we may have overlooked or neglected. Sometimes, anxiety is our body’s way of responding to physical factors like lack of quality sleep or an underlying medical condition. Other times, it’s rooted in existential concerns about our identity, purpose, and how we fit into the world.
